The hail storms, high temperatures and dry conditions of June put a lot of stress on our trees in Colorado.
What is the best way to react to to conditions?
The weather conditions that occur in June often strip trees of leaves, damage branches, cause root dieback and deplete energy reserves. It is very important to react to these conditions appropriately so we don’t further stress out our trees. Many people react to hail storms and the slow growth of early summer by bombarding their trees with high rates of fertilizer and water. High rates of fertilizer encourages trees to push out new growth during a time when they should only be maintaining their canopies, not developing new ones. Additionally, making sure that water is applied based on the tree’s needs is very crucial. Applying too much water at a time when transpiration is low and roots are dying due to heat is dangerous. Too much water will cause more roots to dieback and further stress out your trees.
Monitoring your trees during these difficult times will afford you the information to supply the care your trees need in the amounts they need. In the long run this will save you time, money and reduce the stress to your trees.
