We’re in leaf peeping heaven right now, the mountains look gorgeous, the weather is fabulous and the Broncos are looking awesome! What a great time to live in the Denver area!
I know it’s early, but now is the best time to start thinking about Holiday Lights! The difference between hanging lights in this weather and hanging them in the cold and/or snow is huge. Mountain High not only figures out a design with you, but we purchase the lights, hang the lights, maintain and even store the lights for you till next season. Imagine coming home to a beautifully lit house throughout the holiday season.
Thanks for a great summer season! |

Trees
Fall is here! The leaves are beginning to change and Mother Nature is putting on a show. As the caretakers of our landscapes we can assist our trees and shrubs in order to put on the best display of fall color possible. The key is water, which in Colorado is no surprise. Our trees require water to go through their fall processes, including communicating hormonally from the roots to the branch tips. Supplying the needed water will ensure our landscapes remain functional throughout the fall color season.
It is also important to evaluate your shade trees, including Ash, Oaks, Maples, Cottonwoods, and Crabapples, to look for structural problems. Poor branch structure could manifest itself in heavy limbs, limbs with long/horizontal growth, or branches that have previous damage from wind/snow. Addressing the structure of a tree by correctively pruning the tree can greatly help to reduce the likelihood of winter storm damage. It is much easier and wiser to work on our trees before the snow starts flying, so take a walk through your landscape and look for signs of trouble. If you would like one of Arborists to evaluate your property with you, just give us a call. We would be happy to meet with you this fall.

Lawns
Be Prepared for Winter Mite Control:
|
|
|
Winter mites are starting to appear as sprinkler systems are turned off and lawns dry out:
The warm days and cold nights this October have caused mites to come out early. Lawn mite populations are already high, so damage is already starting in dry and sunny areas of lawns.
As soon as the sprinkler systems get turned off for the season, mite activity starts. Now is the time to start taking action to cut back on winter mite activity. The best way to prevent costly and time consuming lawn repairs in the spring is to combat mite activity during the winter.
During the winter, mites often do a great deal of damage to areas of a lawn while snow covers other areas. Because of this, Mountain High charges only for only the areas sprayed.
A combination of winter watering and mite sprays can keep a yard happy and healthy throughout the dormant season. |
|
|
Areas of west and south facing turf are particularly susceptible to lawn mite damage. As the winter sun beats down on these areas it provides extra heat for the mites to actively feed. At the same time the heat is drying out the ground, so there is no moisture to replenish what the mites are taking from the grass. Other areas hard hit by mites are areas where the sun reflects down from windows, off of light colored fences, rock walls and under evergreens.
Remember:
Winter watering is often not enough to prevent damage. However, winter watering in combination with targeted mite sprays can reduce mite populations to the point where grass can fully and quickly recover in the spring.
Let Mountain High team up with you, so together we can prevent unsightly and expensive mite damage. |

Tip of the Month:
October temperatures can dip overnight. Protect your irrigation system from sudden or overnight freeze to prevent costly damage.
1) Shut off the water to your irrigation system (this valve is normally located inside the house). |
|
2) Open your petcock valve connected to your vacuum breaker.
3) Drain the excess water at the shut off valve.

Fall Needle Cast – It’s Normal!
Day lengths are shortening rapidly, nights are cool and leaves are falling. Fall is upon us. Another rite of autumn is the calls that our office receives about browning in Pines, Spruce and Firs. Just as deciduous trees lose their leaves, evergreens also shed their older needles. Each year and each tree are different in how many needles they will shed and how noticeable it is. The key signs are that it is at this time of year, it is interior and older needles and it is colorful. Ponderosa Pines typically have an orange cast, Spruce will be yellow to bronze. A reminder: Fall and winter are great times to prune your trees. Energy levels are at their peak in trees and our arborists have a great view of each tree’s structure.
