Trees
Healthy trees and shrubs starts with good soil structure and proper
soil nutrition. It is crucial for you to take advantage of this spring
time to ensure the best results for your yard’s health all summer
long.
Promoting soil quality should be part of your landscape care program. The benefits of improving soil quality include, but are not limited to, increased root density, improved drought resistance, vigorous growth, increased leaf density, flower retention, increased fruit production, and vibrant fall color.
In Colorado, our plants have to deal with extreme weather conditions, so it’s important to implement a program to improve the soil that supports our plants every day. Soil improvement programs should be tailored to each specific site. For example, a program for heavy clay soil with high salt levels should include amendments that focus on restructuring the soil and leaching salt. Some of the most common soil improvement products include epsom salt, gypsum, sulfur, chelated iron, blood meal, diatomaceous earth, compost tea, Revive, humic acid, fulvic acid, Superthrive, compost, and Mycorrhizae fungi.
Soil sampling and analysis is the first step in any soil improvement program. It is vital to know what you have in your soil before you start trying to change it. Our Arborists are trained and experienced in evaluating soil health, and we are happy to help you outline a program to ensure your landscape is as healthy and vibrant as possible. Get in touch with us anytime.

Lawns
April is National Lawn Care Month!
Get your lawn headed in the right direction with a professional lawn care program. We will apply a free application of Revive on any new (full program) lawn customer’s turf to help get it headed in the right direction!
It’s finally April, a time to really start looking at all the outdoor activities and warmer weather. April is where we start putting away the winter clothing while starting to enjoy green grass, and flowering plants, gardens and the feel of the sun’s warmth.
One of the best things for many homeowners is being able to relax
out on a lush, green lawn. Thirty million acres of turf across the nation is now turning green and growing. The bar-b-que grills are being unpacked and the trampolines spruced up. So are the lawn mowers, edgers, aerators, and blowers. We all know that a healthy lawn makes all of our outdoor activities that much more enjoyable.
Now is the time to
get the pre-emergent on the lawn to fight things like Crabgrass. It is also the time to get your lawn fed so it gets a good jump start well before the heat of summer hits.
Consider these other benefits of having a healthy lawn:
1. A well cared for lawn can significantly increase property
values.
2. A healthy lawn is of utmost importance to our environment. A
50- foot by 50-foot lawn produces enough oxygen for a family
of four.
3. Lawns cool the atmosphere. Eight average sized healthy front
lawns have the cooling effect of 70 tons of air conditioning,
which is enough for 16 average homes.
4. Grass converts carbon dioxide to oxygen, a process that helps
clear the air.
Thick, healthy grass slows water runoff, removing contaminants and trapping soil. The roots of grass also provide a natural filler, allowing cleaner water to return to the underground water supply.

Temperatures
in March were all over the place. Warm periods had people watering lawns, and blowing snow dropped temps into the low teens. Be sure to protect your vital irrigation components like your vacuum breaker and outside spigots.

Colorado Springs Branch:
Celebrate Arbor Day – Plant A Tree
In the world of trees, April is the month for Arbor Day and planting trees. Julius Sterling Morton started Arbor Day in April of 1872 in Nebraska. Today, Arbor Day is recognized in every state on various dates, usually coinciding with a good time of year to plant trees. In Colorado, Arbor Day is celebrated the third Friday in April. In 2016 Arbor Day is on April 15. Many cities plan events to celebrate Arbor Day.
In the spring we often think of adding a flowering tree to our landscape. Some varieties of Hawthorns
and Crabapples offer both flowering and great fall color. Here are two trees to consider:
Thornless Cockspur Hawthorn – This is a short, wide-spreading tree with dense branching. The mature height is 20 feet with a spread of 15 feet. As the name implies, this Hawthorn has no thorns. It has single white flowers, followed by dark red small fuit that persists into late fall, remaining on the tree as a great accent from fall into winter. The fall leaf color is yellow to orange. This a great stand-alone tree in any landscape but especially good for xeriscapes.
Brandywine Flowering Crabapple – This tree grows to 20 feet with a spread of 25 feet. It has beautiful double, rosy-pink blossoms. The fruit does not persist and starts to drop in mid-summer. New leaf growth is bronze changing to green in summer and it has a reddish fall color. This variety of Crabapple has excellent fireblight resistance.
